The Skeleton Key Trailer

For this particular trailer it's not what about is scary or creepy, it more about the creative plot. It may not come across as the scariest film ever produced but it will sure make the audience think about certain things. As it brings fiction into reality very effectively and convinces the audience that this could well be a believable story line. And this trailer achieves this effect very well leaving the fear of the unknown on the audience.

The trailer begins with a rather uplifting soundtrack which is made out as if the character in the trailer is listening to as she plays it on a old recorder. This keeps the trailer open, making the events in the trailer unexpected. The trailer then uses fade out and fade in effects to establish particularly the facial expression of the character, the location and a somewhat empty looking house. The facial expression of what we now assume the main character to be, looks confused as the audience is taking in what genre this trailer is based on. Sharing these emotions makes the audience think less about the character being an actress and more as if she's been put in a real life situation, listening to a cheerful song, unaware of the events that will occur on her travels to this location.

Immediately we assume something is not right, with the song in the background and the fade in fade out of the empty looking house with wind drawing the feeling of something not feeling right, and gives an idea of an ghost in the presence of this house. Which is exactly what the character expresses within the trailer, as diagetic sound is used when she says, "Oh my God" and closes the door behind her. giving the feeling that she isn't comfortable and rather overwhelm, giving the song playing in the background and the images being displayed.

The trailer then introduces us to the people who supposedly live at this place which seems so weary. An old woman which seems to be looking after an elderly man in the chair is told she has a visitor from which could be her son which we are yet to find out. No one would want to visit this place is what would be pending through the audiences minds and i believe the main character shares this opinion, Bringing in the fact she was and still remains unaware of what she may have gotten into. We find out from the information given in the trailer that the main character works in a hospice and suggest she is here to look after the elderly man whom was sitting in the chair.

The camera then fades out and back in to reveal the man sitting outside in the dark looking almost traumatised. We then find out why the man is in this condition, because of the stroke. The main character then identity's the mans condition as he sits outside looking as if she's trying to figure out what is wrong with him and how he got in this condition. The trailer then displays the attic of the house in sequence with the explanation of what happened to him. It then shows a split second of images, with a young boy sitting surrounded by candles giving the sense of a ritual of some sort and a old recorder, then another image displayed in the same manner of shattered glass and fire, conveying disasters happened. Then reveals the old man looking down in dismay at the camera as if to say this is what it has resulted in. As all of this happens the song fades and a eery sound begins to play in the background building tension and a storyline behind it all.

The elderly women which we now find out is the mans wife then implies the main character to take good care of her husband, but doesn't look all trustworthy and gives an idea of mystery, as she says in a weary voice and the main character looks at her in an unusual manner which shares the thought of her not being trustworthy and that she has been placed out of her comfort zone.

This is just part of the trailer, but the message being conveyed is done very cleverly as it leaves the storyline open and believable, taking the audience out of their own comfort zone, leaving the fear of the unknown displayed within the trailer.
